The Space That Launched a Thousand Ships

Escanaba's North Shore Boat Launch ready for spring debut.

WRAPPING THINGS UP - From left, Escanaba Harbor Master Tom Morin, STS Consultants Project Manager Jeff Bal, Onsite Inspector Brett Baij and Escanaba Parks and Recreation Director Tony Schomin gathered at the new North Shore Boat Launch Tuesday. Schomin praised the contractor's work, given the project's relatively short time-frame for construction.

ESCANABA - The official "ribbon cutting" won't happen until spring, but for all intents and purposes Escanaba's North Shore Boat Launch is finished.

The project will be declared "substantially complete" on Friday, Parks and Recreation Director Tony Schomin said. The launch will be gated and locked during winter to discourage fishing on unstable river ice. Schomin and project managers met this week for a final meeting. Schomin and Mayor Judi Schwalbach and Harbor Master Tom Morin gathered with contractors on Tuesday to inspect the end product that's been years in the making.

"Unveiled" were a fully paved access road and parking lot with space for 200 vehicles and trailers, a 114-foot long ramp leading into the Escanaba River, and an auxiliary attendant's building with storage room and separate restroom building. Six launching docks won't be put in the river until the ice is gone in spring. Crews are finishing up minor landscaping.

As the second largest boat launching facility in the state, the North Shore Boat Launch will be the starting point for professional walleye fishing tournaments next summer. It's intended to also become key in drawing for recreational boaters from across the region.

"It's the best site I've ever seen - and I've been at a lot of launch sites." - said Schwalbach, a boater and member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Also on the wait list until spring is parking lot striping and an environmental determination and disposal of soils unearthed during construction. The items are minor considering the project has been on the state and city's drawing board since 1997. It was a rocky road that led toward the groundbreaking.

A complex and lengthy land sales negotiation at one time threatened to halt the project. Instead, the city hired a lawyer to help finalize an agreement. The chief point of contention was environmental liability. Resolution came in April and the city purchased the 12-acre parcel with a $133,000 State Grant.
